The Chaotic Journey of

Historical Evolution.

About Paulo and Garnace

We are young artists and best friends who sought to explore the deeper meanings and origins of humanity. relating to the pinnacle of historical evolution, the space race which resulted in man landing on the moon in July 20, 1969. Thus, we have come together to express a chaotic but meaningful collage, portraying that chaotic journey amongst the stars.

“one small step for man, one giant leap for Mankind

-Neil Armstrong

The Astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin were the first men to embark on this revolutionary journey by stepping into history in 1969. The moon landing proved to everyone globally that the impossible was possible!

We present to you, ‘The chaotic journey of Historical Evolution’.

Linking History and Evolution

The both of us have been planning on how our themes linked. So we’ve recorded our planning via two applications:

  • Notes – for written evidence
  • Pinterest – for visual inspiration.

Composition

We planned to use two pieces of A5 sheets of paper stuck together with Sellotape, then we glued down an old A5 world map in the centre.

Then we agreed for one side to be based on science, philosophy and human evolution and the other side to be based on politics, American history and NASA.

During the Process…

It was quite windy although the sun was out (we worked outside).

Our cut-outs kept flying in the wind, aside from that, Kirstein and I had fun during the process of placing where each individual photo goes on our large paper map.

Angela Garnace

Astronaut with Golden Record

A coincidence we have found from the help of the wind was that the Golden Record photo had overlapped on the American astronaut photo, giving the impression of him creating the disc.

Outcome

Song: Don’t Stop Believing (Instrumental) by Journey. Time Lapse – Video made by Garnace.

Hidden Meanings

Monkey – Missile

On the left side of the collage, we have intentionally placed a photo of animal sketches on the corner of the page, then we overlapped this picture with the process of evolution – monkey to man. We agreed that the man looks as if he was going to enter or evolve into a missile is which shows human advancement of technology as well as showing a process of destruction. – Written by Angela

Einstein & Freud

Since Einstein is quoted as saying, “creativity is contagious” and we must “pass it on”, his portrait along with Sigmund Freud’s both face the camera, as if we are called in request for us to share our creative potential. – Written by Angela

NY – USSR

On the right side of the collage, Kirstein had placed the Statue of Liberty and a photo of the USSR flag next to each other. During the process however, she found herself rearranging for a jet plane to be in-between the two photos which lead to her thinking about a Beatles song called “Back in the USSR” which we both found amusing. – Written by Angela.

We helped each other out whilst creating our own concertina books! Here are some photos of our books and the collage. Guess which one belongs to who 🙂

That is all for our collaboration. Hope you like our work and thank you for visiting our page!
